The Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary has a Bachelor of Commerce program that includes one required course in Management Information Systems (MIS). A main objective for the required MIS course is to show students how IT can be applied successfully in various business environments. After using a trial version of Microsoft MapPoint 2002, instructors recognized the potential of MapPoint 2002 as a new learning tool to introduce the students to analysis of geographic data. As part of this MIS course, students partnered with Calgary businesses to determine a management challenge that might benefit from using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
