Over the few years there has been much evolution of application models in search of the ideal balance between cost and performance. The arrival of Rich Internet Applications may very well be that ideal. The value of a given application to an organization can be measured by comparing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) with its Performance, Usability and Productivity (PUP). TCO covers all the up-front and ongoing costs of an application and includes such things as; purchase price, equipment, installation, training and ongoing maintenance. PUP is a measure of the performance of the application, combined with its usability as well as the users' productivity. The ideal application would be one with a low TCO and a high PUP.
