Millions of people depend on The Weather Channel to provide constantly-updated information to keep them informed as dangerous weather conditions approach. The Weather Channel's IT Infrastructure has to be bullet-proof. And the data, which is also packaged and sold to external customers, must be available 24/7. In order to achieve these objectives, The Weather Channel initiated a project in 2001 to migrate applications and databases from proprietary UNIX-based platforms to Intel Itanium- and AMD Opteron-based platforms running Red Hat Enterprise Linux. VERITAS Storage Foundation for Linux software helped facilitate the migration to this new server platform and operating system. The ability to manage the resulting heterogeneous storage environment is made possible using VERITAS NetBackup and Storage Foundation for Linux software.
