Before 2005, Hawaiian Electric COmpany (HECO) lacked any software management capability to centrally manage business critical services such as billing, enterprise resource planning, and communications. The HECO business strategy called for a data center consolidation followed by a migration of core business applications off an IBM mainframe to updated distributed systems. To support business services, HECO made a large investment with Avaya in Voice over IP (VoIP) telephony and needed a way to control that from a single point as well. The electric company looked for a reliable, cost-effective, and scalable world-class enterprise management solution. HECO engaged HP and Pepperweed Consulting to design and implement a management software solution based on the HP OpenView architecture and portfolio of products.
