The New York State Teachers' Retirement System (NYSTRS) saw its lone data center as an unacceptable point of vulnerability in the event of disaster. With more than 375,000 teachers and administrators depending on it for their benefits, the retirement system was missing a crucial ingredient for the timely recovery of its business systems: a set of backup systems at an alternate location. NYSTRS chose IBM Integrated Technology Services to create its "Hot site" - a continuously maintained mirror of its IT environment that could be up and running within minutes in the event of a catastrophic interruption of service at its primary data center.
