In August of 2003, a lot of companies thought they had UPS coverage, so they thought a power failure was not a business failure. They were wrong. Offline (or standby) UPSs let disturbances through, damaging or destroying systems and data. Line-interactive UPSs ran out of battery power before the blackout even started, lost power during generator start-up or failed when power came back on.
