During 2005, the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) research center of the university's College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences acquired an HP Cluster Platform 6000 supercomputer, with the goal of increasing available computing power to the CMM in order to meet research project deadlines. The new platform would provide a means for the Universidad de Chile to collaborate with other universities in South America and the Pacific Rim through a supercomputer grid in conjunction with the Supercomputing Center at the University of San Diego. The HP Cluster Platform 6000 was designed to provide high performance computing power for scientific applications such as weather and climate modeling, bioengineering, traffic simulations, and development of copper extraction solutions through bioleaching on an industrial scale.
