Channel estimates obtained using the conventional correlation-based approach are biased when short spreading sequences are employed in CDMA systems. In addition, they suffer from Inter-Path Interference (IPI) due to the non-zero autocorrelation values of typical spreading sequences. For long-code systems, sometimes known as aperiodic spreading, the estimates are unbiased but still corrupted by IPI. A simple decorrelating estimator, which may be implemented approximately using the Gauss-Seidel iterative technique, is proposed to remove the bias and IPI, and hence improve estimation performance.
