Research training has long been seen as a successful NOVA activity. The Nordic PhD courses enjoy long-standing traditions, but the establishment of NOVA cemented and formalised them as one of the prioritised NOVA areas. Of a total number of approximately 2 000 registered PhD students at the member institutions, some 10% take a NOVA PhD course every year. Several initiatives have been taken during the past years to improve the PhD course concept. This holds for the courses in themselves as well as the funding procedures and the marketing of courses among the potential students.
