Located in Blacksburg, Va., The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is one of the largest universities in the state. Instructors who feel comfortable checking email and posting a syllabus online often find they lack the knowledge and skills to effectively integrate technology into their discipline-specific teaching and research practices. Virginia Tech realized that if technology was to be broadly adopted to support teaching and learning on campus, faculty members would need incentives and support to transform their practices. Faculty Development Institute (FDI) and Virginia Tech have garnered multiple awards for innovative technology programs, including the 2005 EDUCAUSE Award for Systemic Progress in Teaching and Learning.
