Existing enterprise Information Technology (IT) systems often inhibit business flexibility, sometimes with dire consequences. This paper argues that operating system research should be measured, among other things, against the ability to improve the speed at which businesses can change. The paper describes some of the ways in which businesses need to change rapidly, speculate about why existing IT infrastructures inhibit useful change, and suggest some relevant OS research problems.
