Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags have long had the potential to make airline operations much more efficient, improve security and cut costs, but that potential has been delayed by technology standards questions and the cost of the individual tags. Capable of storing many identifying and tracking pieces of information on a small chip that can be accessed when passed by a reader unit, these tags already have made major inroads in the logistics chains of major retailers and are becoming the preferred aircraft parts tracking device. Now it is said that RFID is on the threshold of widespread adoption in the tracking of baggage, cargo and perhaps even passengers.
