Edinburgh is in the forefront of technology that automatically gives buses the green light, reduces traffic congestion and encourages use of public transport. TIRIS Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology from Texas Instruments is being used in Edinburgh in the latest traffic-light priority system aimed at easing traffic congestion and reduction of road accidents, while encouraging the use of public transport. In the first phase, Edinburgh Council installed a TIRIS-based system from JMW Systems at 57 approaches to the west of the city. Radio frequency transponders mounted on the City Council's fleet of 800 vehicles control the sequence of traffic lights to change to give public transport vehicles priority at some of the UK's busiest junctions.
