Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) show a vast potential for growth, and Philips is building on its existing strengths in vehicle ID technology to meet the market's needs. The emerging TPMS market is a direct result of the US Transportation Recall Enhancement Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act. This act was passed to improve vehicle safety following a series of product recalls in 2000. Other stipulations of the TREAD act include the requirement that vehicle and tire manufacturers accurately track and document individual tires along with the vehicles on which they are mounted. It's a requirement that Michelin, the world's second largest tire manufacturer, has met using Philips RFID chips and a unique method for vulcanizing the transponders into tires.
