Many businesses use the traditional public-switched phone network as a benchmark standard for their converged data networks. To help network operators achieve similar high-availability goals, Cisco Systems has reinforced Cisco IOS Software with enhancements that work alongside redundant hardware components in Cisco routers to enable immediate recovery after a route processor failure so that packets continue being forwarded with little to no interruption. The latest Cisco software feature to support this capability is called Cisco Nonstop Routing (NSR). Cisco NSR operates in Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) networks. An enhancement to Cisco Nonstop Forwarding and Stateful Switchover (NSF/SSO) capabilities, Cisco NSR eliminates the requirement for all router peers to support the same protocol modifications in order to work.
