Configure Internet Explorer so that you can make Skype calls directly from a Web page or from the browser toolbar.

Skype uses the packet protocols of the Internet to transmit voice data - essentially creating a free VoIP service. This hack from Skype Hacks: Tips & Tools for Cheap, Fun, Innovative Phone Service, by Andrew Sheppard explains that there are three ways to make Skype calls directly from within a Web browser.

  • The skype URL prefix
  • The callto:// URL prefix
  • The Skype toolbar
