This chapter from the latest edition of Windows Admin Scripting Little Black Book provides more than a dozen ready-to-use scripts to illustrate techniques for automating install and update chores.

You can probably think of a million repetitious tasks that would be good candidates for automation--but who has time to figure out how to script them all? Apparently, Jesse Torres does. The newest edition of his Windows Admin Scripting Little Black Book, released this month by Paraglyph Press, offers tutorials and scripts covering scores of admin chores, including file management, remote system management, registry maintenance, security, backup, and scheduling.

This sample chapter explains how to use scripting methods to perform common administrative updates and installations, both from the command line and by using a free send-keys utility called AutoIt. The chapter provides more than a dozen examples of scripts you can use to perform application installs and uninstalls, including scripting silent installations of .NET Framework, Windows 2000/XP Service Pack, Internet Explorer, WinZip, Acrobat Reader, MDACS, RealVNC, pcANYWHERE, and the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
