As part of its overall accreditation process, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) uses a specific set of standards to evaluate the physical plant and safety in healthcare facilities. These standards, which fall under the JCAHO chapter called "Management of the Environment of Care (EOC)," include more than 180 "Elements of Performance" that address the physical characteristics of a facility in terms of safety and its suitability for healthcare, as well as stipulating the practices that ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
