Knowledge acquisition tools have been developed for metal stamping to record this experience but these commonly focus on upstream design areas or numerical process control. Such tools do not attempt to record the experience based knowledge generated on the shop floor which is used to overcome problems in production, during tryout or to assist in designing new parts and dies. This is partly due to the resistance to change these areas exhibit to new tools and technology. This paper outlines the software development methodology adopted for the design and implementation of a knowledge capture system for use within an automotive stamping facility.
