ABB ALSTOM POWER (AAP) came into being in 1999, with the merger of subdivisions of the ABB Group (ABB Kraftwerke) and ALSTOM. The prime concern within the merger was to combine the two IT networks. The newly-formed AAP (Schweiz) AG took the opportunity to set up its own hardware and network environment with direct access to the Internet. This involved the purchase of a standard dedicated proxy server. However, this solution had a number of disadvantages; access was restricted to 500 users per server, which would have necessitated the acquisition of at least six servers, including storage arrays. The Project Manager at Compaq suggested the installation of an internet caching server, the new Compaq TaskSmart, based on the Novell ICS software package.
