MPLS-based IP VPN and VPLS have matured to the point where they offer a true alternative without sacrificing the reliability that enterprises have come to rely on from their existing services. With Ethernet as the access, they support the convergence of existing services by providing multiple classes of service to ensure the appropriate performance for applications that are critical to the enterprise. In short, they provide user-centric choices to the enterprise.
Alcatel's ICT group in North America was facing the challenges of the typical enterprise. They took the challenge to reengineer their network from the ground up. They were able to accomplish the transition efficiently, and are now enjoying the benefits. Their choices can serve as a model to other enterprises, and provide service providers with an insight into their key decision factors.
