Data is vulnerable to theft when at rest, in transit, and being processed. And when data is being processed, attackers can use spyware, installed surreptitiously on the desktop, to collect information as it is entered. Technical controls, the focus of this white paper, must address access control, perimeter protection, remote access, endpoint protection, and safeguards against internal theft. Uniquely, the Cisco Self-Defending Network approach employs a proactive, rather than reactive, defense. For example, Cisco Security Agent not only prevents spyware from capturing keystrokes, but it also prevents installation of spyware on users' desktops. This white paper describes prevention technologies for theft of information for both wired and wireless networks.
