Organizations requiring Multi-level Security have faced many challenges. Implementing Multi-level Security has traditionally been an expensive process, made more difficult by the fact that traditional Multi-level Security and Mandatory Access Control capabilities have previously not been available in a mainstream operating system. As most of the trusted operating systems that provide these capabilities have failed and exited the market, a new solution is required. This whitepaper provides an introduction to Multi-level Security, proceeds to examine the problems associated with past implementations, provides a roadmap for Multilevel Security in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and demonstrates how Security-Enhanced Linux in conjunction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides this new, more capable and more flexible solution.
