Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is an IT strategy that employs technology to deploy and access data according to business demands. ILM makes use of multiple tiers of storage devices and proactive management to automatically move data between storage tiers based on a set of specific policies that define how data is stored, migrated and retrieved. An ILM strategy creates efficiencies for IT while at the same time addressing business requirements ranging from transaction processing to business intelligence to regulatory compliance. Implemented properly, an ILM strategy increases corporate competitiveness, helps ensure regulatory compliance and responsiveness to legal discovery requirements, and reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of storage.
