This paper describes a security system, called SpyBlock, that protects web passwords from malicious spyware and keyloggers. The system consists of two components: a browser extension that runs in an untrusted environment with the browser and other applications, and an authentication agent that runs in an environment that is protected from spyware. Using a virtual machine monitor, the trusted and untrusted components can both run on the same physical machine. The user only interacts with the trusted component during authentication; all other web browsing activity can be conducted using the untrusted application environment. SpyBlock is implemented as an open source Firefox extension that is available for download.
