The basic requirements for data backup, disaster recovery, and data archiving are not the same, and a sensible management of these processes must be balanced with the costs involved. The concept of data backup includes not only the backing up of data, but also the ability to restore the data after some loss or failure, either accidentally (disk failure) or through the wilful destruction of the data. The issues of data disaster recovery are similar to those of data backup. In addition, the applications data as well as the systems data must be available. This paper presents various aspects of data backup and disaster recovery.
