Applications have a need to keep track of the sequence of user's interactions. Web applications are no different in this respect. But Web application servers have to do this over multiple HTTP requests. Such a sequence is commonly maintained in what is known as a session state. For scalability and availability purposes, most enterprises use multiple application server instances for an application. For a load balancer that is routing requests to multiple application server instances, it should route HTTP requests for an already existing session to the same application server. This is called session binding. As part of the Oracle Application Server, OracleAS Web Cache 10g provides session binding with its load-balancing capabilities.
