Patients and nurses at St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, can all rest better these days knowing that new technology running on HP iPAQ Pocket PCs is protecting patients from medication errors and reducing health care costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Using bar-code and RFID technology and a wireless network, the VeriScan medication administration verification system confirms that a nurse has the correct patient, medication, time, dose and route each time a medication is administered. Developed by Sculptor Developmental Technologies, a St. Clair subsidiary, the system has been in use for two years and is preventing more than 5,000 medication errors yearly.
