In the first phase of the project work presented in this paper, several open source LMSs were tried out to answer the question whether it is meaningful to integrate support for mobile telephones into such a system designed for web-based e-learning typically using a PC's screen as display. The authors explain it is quite obvious that there is no way of displaying a considerable fraction of the information provided by such systems on the display of mobile phones. In order to maintain at least a basic level of usability, nearly all information provided by such LMSs would have to disappear to make a bit of room to the courseware.
