Located about 35 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., Prince William County is a mixture of farmland and suburban development. Creating a digital representation of every aspect of the system is a huge undertaking in and of itself. The task is made more difficult by the fact that the system is inherently dynamic and constantly changing - new businesses, new housing developments are constantly coming on line, water mains and sewer pipes require maintenance, and so on. The Prince William County (Va.) Service Authority (PWCSA) is meeting this challenge with the help of an integrated OpenGIS solution comprised of Autodesk MapGuide and Map software, WaterMAP and the Oracle E-Business Suite.
