Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) is comprised of agency representatives from the San Bernardino National Forest, Southern California Edison, State and Local Office of Emergency Services, etc. MAST wanted to select best-in-class technology solution to supplement inter-agency collaborative initiative. They also wanted to identify equipment that could provide mobility and survive the rigors of deployment into extremely adverse environments. ESRI met with MAST and suggested GIS as a way to understand the problem, analyze it and develop long- and short-term strategies. The solution included HP iPAQ Pocket PCs, equipped with integrated GPS receiver card, wireless LAN card and ruggedized case, distributed to front-line and recognizance personnel.
