Although Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is already well-known, many companies remain at the pilot stage. In response to the U.S. Department of Defense and Wal-Mart mandates, key suppliers have largely reacted with a purely compliance-based approach. That strategy, although convenient in the short term, takes little advantage of RFID's capabilities for readability, throughput, speed, data volumes and capture rates to dynamically react, predict and respond. Other companies are taking a more holistic approach to RFID by taking advantage of increasing yield rates, interoperable standards, agile readers capable of reading multiple tag types, well-organized industry groups and flexible middleware. To assist those companies, IBM and Intermec Technologies Corporation have formed a global alliance specifically to create highly integrated, production-scale RFID systems.
