IP networks are increasingly being used to deliver enhanced voice services. Unlike the PSTN, elements in a VoIP network are distributed and utilize flexible signaling protocols and open application interfaces to advance the development and deployment of new voice services. Media and packet processing subsystems provide the enabling technology to connect VoIP networks to legacy TDM networks and to deliver IP media streams that represent the "voice" in the voice services application. As such, these subsystems are at the center of media gateway and media server functions in the VoIP network. This seminar will explain how media and packet processing enables media gateways and media servers in a VoIP network and will explore critical requirements for these processing functions.
