Due to repeated environmental attacks, the U.S. Virgin Islands' educational communications infrastructure was operating inconsistently. The network was unreliable and extremely expensive due to recurring telecommunications charges. Another challenge was to connect numerous schools and administrative buildings on three different islands: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. Because of P-COM's successful reputation, the DOE contacted P-COM to see what help wireless broadband solutions could offer. P-COM connected 124 sites with their SPEEDLAN wireless solutions at a fraction of the cost of installing a wired network.
