Developments in RFID are arguably one of the most profound influences on tracking technology since the development of the barcode. Labels or 'tags' themselves presently cost only about twenty cents, but it can be assumed that improvements in production techniques coupled with high demand will in the future combine to decimate even this price. In addition to the low cost of consumables, the hardware needed to encode and read these RFID labels is also reducing in price and increasing in facility. Perhaps the most significant breakthrough has been the ability of a reader to interrogate many labels at once. In developing their WebSphere strategy, IBM has chosen to engineer in specific provision for this technology.
