After nearly two full years of planning and a semester-long pilot program, the Manatee County School District in Florida is ramping up its 1:1 laptop initiative. By the fall of 2003, iBook computers running Mac OS X had been distributed in 22 elementary and secondary classrooms. But Manatee school administrators readily admit that their most important lessons have not been learned from "experts" or focus group presentations. Their students have taught them virtually everything they need to know about launching a successful 1:1 laptop program.
