One of the oldest cities in Virginia, Hampton is experiencing the challenges faced by many urban school districts. A large number of the city's 23,000 K - 12 students fall into the at-risk category. Access to technology tools at home is limited. With Apple's help, a long-term plan was put together for a phased rollout of the iBook laptop initiative. Some 260 teachers and students at Lindsay Middle School received the first batch of the wireless iBook laptops in the 2001 - 2002 school year.
