Over the last few months a number of new initiatives have hit the supply chain. This paper concentrates on two of these which are set to have a huge impact - Global Data Synchronization (GDS) and Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID). Both initiatives are seeking to improve standardisation of product data across the supply chain and the sharing of that information between trading partners. Both in turn provide new classification procedures for defining product information and as such require organisations to look at both their internal data integration infrastructure and their outward facing communication processes.
