Lawrence Livermore National Labaratory (LLNL), located in Livermore, Calif., is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory operated by the University of California. The laboratory's original backup system met the institute's needs when it was first installed; however, the system was difficult to use and manage. Also over time, the system was unable to meet the laboratory's growing need to backup multiple platforms. The Electronics Engineering Department consists of a dozen buildings spread over a square-mile campus. NetWorker's backup server runs on a Sun Solaris machine that's connected to a StorageTek9710 tape library with six DLT70005. NetWorker centrally manages all of the department's backup operations, which includes 150 systems, over the laboratory's wide area network.
