Storing data on magnetic tape has historically been a critical component of an organizations business continuity planning. Tape storage is cost-effective, reduces the need for additional online storage capacity and safeguards data from physical disasters or viruses. For large customers with data centers and mainframe-based infrastructure, tape storage systems are vital repositories for corporate and customer data. Many companies have few viable options for low-cost, long-term storage and archive of their data especially in the event of catastrophic equipment failure, virus attack or natural disaster. It is a necessity that physical tapes must be stored off site and protected from theft by controlling access to the secondary storage site.
