Centralised network management is not the vision it was in 1997 - even small companies routinely have their networks centrally (and even remotely) managed, and DHCP plays no small part in this picture. Although unglamorous and oft-ignored, managing a large, dynamic network of hosts without DHCP would be very difficult (essentially impossible, or at least highly impractical), particularly given the dynamic nature of today's networks. Using DHCP, an attacker who sets up a malicious DHCP server onsite can alter the IP addressing and subnetting, DNS, and routing on any host, allowing the attacker to manipulate this with potentially with no knowledge by (or visible disruption to) the user.
