In 2000 Cisco Aironet 350 Series and subsequently Cisco Aironet 1200 Series wireless access points used the VxWorks operating system, which was the best operating system available at the time. In mid-2003 wireless support for Cisco IOS Software became available, and Cisco IT decided to migrate, thinking that a common operating system across wired and wireless network devices would make management, support, availability, and future enhancements easier. Several tools aided in the migration process but Cisco IT staff preferred CiscoWorks Wireless LAN Solution Engine (WLSE), a Cisco appliance for managing WLAN deployments.
