The Memphis Regional Chamber of Commerce, an economic development organization serving a metro region encompassing eight counties in three states: Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, is using GIS to illustrate spatial relationships and to get a competitive advantage over other communities interested in attracting business projects to their areas. The Memphis Regional Chamber of Commerce began using GIS technology to promote economic development efforts in 1998. During the following years, using ESRI's ArcView, the chamber took steps toward developing strong relationships with local and regional data producers such as county property assessors, local planning agencies, utilities providers, emergency management agencies, private engineering firms, and the local community of commercial and industrial real estate developers.
