Located in the world's Arctic region, Reykjavik, Iceland, is the northernmost national capital in the world, but not the coldest (an honor experienced by Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) and not the snowiest (a gift bestowed upon Ottawa, Canada). As part of Reykjavik's move to stay on top of technology within the city's operations, it embarked on incorporating GIS into its capabilities in the late 1980s. The city developed the Land Information System of Reykjavik (LUKR) including Reykjavik and six surrounding towns. The benefits from LUKR spread throughout the city's public and private sectors, and as LUKR was the pioneer in GIS in Iceland, it has had a great impact throughout the country.
