As interest in fixed-mobile convergence continues to rise, one technology increasingly dominates discussion: the IP Multimedia Subsystem, or IMS. IMS is emerging as the technology that will enable service providers to move beyond the limitations of today's cellular mobile architectures. Not only that, but IMS is rapidly becoming a key element in the development of next-generation networks, both fixed and mobile, potentially giving it a central role in all future networking - not just in wireless networks. Based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), IMS has been adopted by both 3GPP and 3GPP2 (where it is known as MMD), and will be deployed across all types of 3G networks.
