One currently witnesses an enormous interest of both research and corporate practice in RFID technologies and applications. Whereas firms consider RFID mostly from a cost/benefit perspective, various other social groups ask for an in-depth analysis of the technology's risks. Risks associated with RFID include harmful electromagnetic radiation, but also indirect effects such as increasing unemployment caused by automated processes. The highest ranked risk by far is the risk of using RFID in order to spy on RFID-equipped goods and their owners. In this article we take a close look the perception of RFID-related risks for information privacy by analysing IT news on RFID in the Internet and discussions by the readers of these texts.
