The problem of delivering and supporting complex network elements for the telecom market has fallen naturally into two distinct development phases: system integration and element creation. In the system integration phase, industry-standard subsystems are integrated into a functional "base platform," which consists of arbitrary hardware, operating system and manageability elements. These base platforms are then used in the element creation phase as the starting point for the rendering of a completed network element. By properly leveraging the first phase of this process, Network Equipment and Service Providers (NEPs and NSPs) will be able to realize the benefits of a configurable, common platform offering, which reduces time-to-market via commoditization, maximizes interoperability via industry standards and optimizes net revenue.
