Data from patient studies must be continuously available and quickly accessible to the medical staff at Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation's busiest health care centers. With lives on the line, the clinic cannot tolerate data lost to unreliable storage products. In the 1990s, the clinic made the decision to deploy a centralized digital data archive to house imaging studies created in multiple departments by different applications. After evaluating various alternatives, the clinic determined that StorageTek 9840 tape drives and media provided cost-effective, high-performance storage that met all the reliability challenges of an access-centric medical data archive.
