TOTAL Exploration and Production, Balikpapan, has operating fields in the Mahakam delta on the east coast of Kalimatan (Borneo) Island, Indonesia. TOTAL wanted to improve its preparation of the horizontal well in the Tambora field and develop alternative geosteering scenarios in this highly uncertain geological area. One of the main challenges was to provide the geosteering application with a good geological model in order to get representative log simulations. TOTAL chose Petrel workflow tools and Data & Consulting Services (DCS) to achieve its goals. The workflow provided guidelines to geosteering, and it showed that in the event of a lithological change there would still be time for reaction before exiting the reservoir.
