The case study of the SPDE system at the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, and the example of the process for validating precinct edits against the street segment data, demonstrate the benefits of using GIS technology to integrate GIS data and workflow management with a Registrar of Voters' traditional voter and election information management system. By developing SPDE, Los Angeles County has not only been able to reduce the staff hours required for entering precinct, district, and street segment edits and managing hard copy maps, it has also established a data source for other critical applications such as Precinct Mapping, a state mandated function.
